He defends Chris when Chris was branded a thief and when Chris was threatened at knifepoint by Ace, Gordie got out the gun and once again stood by Chris. At the end of the film, Gordie confirms the importance of the friendship that he shared with Chris by saying, 'you can never friends like those you had when you were twelve years old'. The friendship between the four boys as a group is not considered as important as the friendship between Chris and Gordie. While all four boys went on the journey together, Vern and Teddy's contributions to the friendship were not very significant because in critical moments in the film such as the final moments with Ace and his gang, both boys failed to demonstrate loyalty and some of the other qualities required in important friendships.
             In his novel 'The Great Gatsby', F. Scott Fitzgerald explores the contributions of individuals to friendship and some factors that limit the individual's contribution. Fitzgerald wrote about an adult friendship between two different men. Like the four young boys from 'Stand by me', Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby did not have much in common.
