The internet has been a great innovation since it was created and has served as a highly useful tool in every business, institution, and household. Because of its convenience, like every other convenient tool in this world, the internet makes everything too convenient. It has now replaced day to day activities such as shopping, grocery shopping, socializing and even working. Of course, that's great and all but isn't that what is wrong with the world? We try to "better" things too much that it back fires in some surprising way. The point is excessive internet usage can cause mental damage to a person; there should be solutions to every problem that stems from this addiction.
The first problem to be addressed is the fact that some people have the misconception that the internet can serve as a place to develop intimate and active relationships with others. Through chat rooms and online communities people are able to communicate to each other regardless of location. The key thing to note is, people can only communicate, not form a real relationship with each other. An online relationship simply isn't a relationship none the less; it lacks the true elements of what a relationship is. When people chat online, they are unable to really see or touch each other; they are just talking to strangers who could be lying about their age and gender (Keahoe, 1995, p. 122). Take for example, the many young teenagers who spend hours online every night talking to the "52 year old male" who claims to be 17, many of them meet these strangers in person and end up getting kidnapped or rapped. The best way to handle this problem would be to become educated about potential online predators. All Schools and institutions should be allowed to devote some time to students to advise them on how to spot out and avoid internet predators.
