Mitchell attempts to explain photographs without and text or captions attached to these images. Although may be difficult to analyze these photographs without captions or eye catching visuals, these pictures combine as one to make a general statement. He defines these essays to be "Photographic essays." The stories he describes and the images in these stories are completely independent. While many stories tend to insert images correlating to that part of the text, His point is to show us that these pictures give us a general idea of the story.
             I believe the "Famous Man" was a wonderful example of his point. The pictures are completely apart from the text and although it may be confusing, there is a great meaning to these pictures. His general topics are shown through these figures. Agee's images bring many questions to our mind. While general pictures with captions just give us an image of what is happening, these pictures tend to make us contemplate the meaning of the picture. Although this may distort the true meaning of the picture, it is a valuable mechanism in order to fully understand the text. The pictures of these human beings in Agee's text may be disturbing and beautiful at times. These people give us a general idea of these times and what these people had to endure during this hardship. I believe Said's essay is a great example of this as well. Although his pictures may be a bit straightforward, his pictures show the life a these people through their own eyes. He does not show the violence or depression going on in this country. He shows their everyday lives yet these pictures feel empty and create a feeling of uneasiness.
