sought to establish their own society, church and government based on their religious beliefs. The Puritans saw themselves as responsible for cleansing society of its "ills" that being drunkenness, gambling, swearing, etc.
             A revitalization of religious beliefs took place in America from the 1730's through the 1770's, often called "the first great awakening". The Protestant cultures at that time sought to reaffirm their views that belief in God and the Bible meant trusting the heart not the head, valuing feeling over thinking and a relevance on biblical revelation. This awakening took place through the different denominations of colonial America from the Presbyterians, Puritans and Baptists. The "revival" was used by each of the denominations to deliver powerful, emotionally charged sermons telling its members of the corruption of human beings of the hell that awaits an unrepentant society.
