The reporter learns a lot about his obsession with both alcohol and women. Many women that Ty Cobb encountered felt that they could control Ty Cobb and his drinking and antics. However none of them could and his children were so disappointed in him that they did not to have anything to do with their dad. Ty Cobb was a ruthless player on the field as well; he would antagonize the opposing team to the point where his life would be endangered by the other team or opposing fans. He often felt that if players wanted to hurt him so bad, that it also meant that they did not want to play him as well. He had been considered one of the best baseball players ever, but due to his antics both on the field and off of the field many people think of him as a self-centered man who only cared for himself. (Cobb) Even though Ty Cobb was disliked by so many, he still loved the game and he was quoted as saying, "Baseball was one hundred percent of my life." (Dickinson, pg. 83) Just before he passed away he made a statement that people will always remember; "The great trouble with baseball today is that most of the players are in the game for the money, that's it-not for the love of it, excitement of it, or the thrill of it." (Dickinson, pg. 87) Players like Ty Cobb set a great example to how baseball players should be playing the game.
