. During WWII, a reported "200,000 women from East Asian nations occupied by the Japanese Imperial Army ...were forced into prostitution by the Japanese army." These women consisted of people from Korea, China, Philippines, Burma, Indonesia, and even Japan. However, the majority of the women were from Korea. Many of these women became sterile from multiple rapes by the Japanese soldiers. "Women who became pregnant or infected with a sexually transmitted disease were given a shot of the antibiotic terramycin, which the women referred to as 'Number 606,'" which was basically an abortion drug. Although the Japanese government initially denied ever employing comfort women, in 1991, a small group of former comfort women from Korea demanded compensation for what the Japanese put them through. This lawsuit slowly encouraged women from other countries to come forward as well. In 1996, the Japanese government began to pay these women through the Asian Women's Fund and Prime Minister Hashimoto apologized to the women on behalf of Japan. However, these women were not interested in money. They wanted Japan to carry out a full investigation of the crime and justice for the mental anguish and pain they endured. In recent years, the voices and determination of these women have become more powerful. But unfortunately, the lawsuit and the issues of the comfort women have yet to be resolved. This is just one of the many cruel treatments that were enforced upon the Koreans during Japanese occupation in Korea.
