What is important about Mike, however, is how his life has or has not changed after the people of New York decided to return to normality and concentrate on public and private life as it had been before the attacks. While many have certainly managed to do that, does Mike still seem to be caught in the images of the past. He obviously has not returned to his old job, but has written a book about his 9-month involvement in the reconstruction work on Ground Zero. Neither has he been able to cope with the fact that life just went on without him. He is now just one of many, nobody special. People are not in awe anymore when he tells them about what he did for their city but are busy with getting their own lives in order. Mike can obviously not simply return. He hopes that people will buy his book, listen to him when he tells them of the time when he slept on Church benches and neglected his own life in order to serve his country and the people in it.
