ares she does not want to leave the house now that she found the wallpaper and the things in it. She sees the paper woman shaking the bars of the paper, crawling and creeping around, and makes up her mind about letting the woman out; when she finishes peeling off the paper she starts creeping around the room herslef. She now knows she was actually the woman behind bars, and is very proud that she was able to get herslef out. When John gets back and sees the room bare and his wife creeps on the floor, she explains to him that she got out of his "bars", which causes his faint. The narrator is so caught up in her feelings of freedom, that she totally ignores the fact her husband is on the floor and just creeps over him.
             Very quickly in the story the room becomes a main "character" and a central symbol. The room is a symbol of all the things that keep the narrator locked in her own mind, life and confusion- her husband John, her sister-in-law Jennie and her own brother. As much as she would like to break through it and get out, she is hidden behind their "bars" and cannot bring a change to her life. Since the very beginning of the story we come to realize that it is true the narrator is not completely well, and that, in fact, she is somewhat ill. It is clear that on some level she is mentally ill, but it seems like there is no justification to what her husband puts her through.
