Dickinson Analysis

             Explication of " Because I could not stop for Death"
             When looking over the published work of Emily Dickinson, the majority of her work can be seen as dark, unconventional, and open form. In Dickinson's " Because I could not stop for Death," Dickinson once again uses an unconventional way to convey her emotional status and deep thoughts through metaphors, and personification.
             "Because I could not stop for Death- He kindly stopped for me-" (lines 1,2). This shows that she is personifying Death as a man. She is also trying to show that because she was unable to stop for Death, kill herself, Death came and got her. This shows that although she didn't commit suicide, it was in her fate to die when she did. This is also shown through, "The Carriage held but just Ourselves- And Immortality." (3,4) Meaning that it wasn't as if Death was going around picking up hitchhikers, but Death came specifically for her.
             "We passed the School, where Children strove At recess- in the Ring-" (9,10). This shows she is watching life or her life go by because childhood represents youth. She shows growth through, "We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain-" (11,12). This represents growth because grain is a harvest that needs to be nurtured, if so it will grow plentiful. "We passed the Setting Sun" (11), the setting sun represents the end of life.
             Not only did Death come for Dickinson's character, whether is be her or not, but she also married Death. " For only Gossamer, my Gown- My Tippet- only Tulle-" (15,16). These lines show that she is now wearing a wedding dress; in addition, they are together in a carriage, meaning that it is after they marry. The journey through her life being their honeymoon, and now they are on their way to live together for eternity.
