'Night' is a deeply despairing portrayal of humanity's inhum

             "Elie Wiesel's 'Night' proved to be a conspicuously depressing text, with various scenes being pessimistic towards humanity however under the great circumstance there was some glimpse of hope."
             The protagonist provides a clear emphasis of many incidences where, there is cruelty of the kapos, poor treatment of the prisoner's towards each other, the inhumanity of the living conditions and the desensitisation of the Jews, and the prisoners lack of faith in God.
             However the novel includes great images of human altruism where, the prisoners support each other, some people maintaining their faith in God despite the horror facing them, and the courageous strength of some Jews.
             The very first example of horrendous acts in the novel is shown through the brutality of the kapos (Jewish police) towards the prisoners. With various situations being re-captured by the protagonist. Such as him (Eliezer) being whipped cruelly twenty five times for being witness to Idek having sex with a Polish girl. On another occasion there's the scene where the young boy is hung in front of the other prisoners because he was one of three punished for finding an important stock of arms. "Three victims in chains- and one of them, the little servant, the sad- eyed angel. The adults tongues hung swollen, blue tinged. But the third rope was still moving; being so light, the child was still alive...." (pp.76-7) Then there is the mere survival of Eliezers father, on his last the guards hit him with utter detachment: " The officer dealt him with a violent blow on the head with his truncheon." (p.122) Therefore humanity's capacity for cruelty among others is immensely shown through the cruel acts of the kapos towards the concentration camp prisoners.
