ts that were passed to protect English shipping, and to secure a profit to the home country from the colonies. One of the barriers of the French and Indian War was the Proclamation of 1763. King George III of England signed this proclamation. This proclamation closed off the frontier to colonial expansion. The King presented the proclamation as a means to calm the Indians. The Indians felt that the colonists would drive them from their lands as they expanded westward. Many in the colonies felt that the object was to confine them to the Atlantic seaboard where they would be easier to control. The colonists could not help but feel a strong resentment when what they perceived to be their territory was being taken away from them. The proclamation provided that all lands west of the heads of all rivers which flowed into the Atlantic Ocean, from the west or northwest, were off-limits to the colonists. This excluded the rich Ohio Valley and all territory from Ohio to the Mississippi rivers from the settlement. This proclamation also added four new colonies: Quebec, East Florida, West Florida, and a continent off of Grenada. Most of this proclamation is devoted to the subject of Indians and their lands. It included a list of prohibited activities, provided for enforcement of the new laws, and indicted persons for illegal practices in acquiring lands from the Indians in past times. The French would leave, and the Indians were left to defend themselves and their grounds. The King took the side of the Indians in this proclamation. This was against the interests of the colonists.
