The Crucible

             Many movies that represent a certain piece of literature may alter one's view on the original piece or it may not. In the movie, The Crucible, many characters had several differences when compared to the novel. However, throughout the whole film, they remained quite similar in many ways. In the film version of The Crucible, many characters' similar personalities enhanced my understanding of Arthur Miller's, The Crucible despite the many differences.
             Abigail Williams is portrayed with many similarities throughout the novel and movie, which improved my understanding of the play. In the novel, she is rather a depraved girl who points the finger at others for the trouble she causes. In the film, she stabs herself with a needle, and them claims the "spirit" of Mary Warren did it, just as she had done in the play. Abby is also a powerful manipulator who threatens her victims to keep her reputation clean. In both film and play, she is constantly yelling and overtaking the group of young girls. She did this so they would not reveal her evil plans. Also, her egotistical ways are openly similar in both novel and film. Abby is constantly declaring that John Proctor loves her and takes much pride in herself because of the past she and John had shared. Just like Abigail Williams, John Proctor is another character who has similar characteristics throughout the movie and play, but also displays many differences.
             John Proctor is a character that does not seem to change much in both the movie and play. He is displayed as a man who is greatly respected by his peers and wife, despite his downfalls. In both film and play, he was shown as a lecher, but he was forgiven in the end by his wife. Proctor also has differences in the movie and the play, such as his reaction to Abigail's seductive words.
