             -"One popular point of inquiry over the years has been the relationship of the title, "A Rose For Emily" to the text. Faulkner minimized the significance of the title when he indicated that it simply reflected Emily's lack of a fulfilling life" (Jones 122).
             "...the noun rose is not used in the story, but that the upstairs bedroom has a rose hue. The title may suggest the rose as a tribute to Emily's effort to triumph over time" (Jones 122).
             Emily is a bull fighter that receives a rose. Much like a bull fighter receives a rose for winning a bull fight, so does Emily receive a rose for winning against the town people for not enduring change. The change is represented by the taxes that Emily does not pay.
             Other critics refer the rose to that of an ancient Rome custom. In ancient Rome, a rose suspended in a room indicated that confidential activities were occurring there. Neither Emily nor the towns people knew the nature of her actions hence the appropriateness of the rose suspended above the story text.
             A more traditional belief of the rose refers to Homer. "Homer is a rose in that he brought hope back into her (Emily's) lonely existence. After he was killed by Emily, she preserved him, much like a rose is preserved as a memento. The significance extends also to the rose-colored room. In it, Emily unconsciously strove to reaffirm her femininity , and Homer eventually becomes an inextricable part of the room. The rose represents the fantasy world in which Emily enjoys both love and control. Homer is also seen as the rose that has been preserved as a memento of a former time. Critics argue that Emily's fragile emotional equilibrium is destroyed when she realizes that Homer is not interested in marriage, so she acts to keep the memento of him as proof that love once flourished.
