Once in India, Gandhi was asked by Rajkumar Shukla to travel and see the conditions Indians were living in. When Gandhi saw the conditions of indigo farmers in Champaran, he began his first Satyagraha campaign in India to get the conditions changed and succeeded. The second campaign Gandhi pursued was that in Kaira in Gujarat. Kaira had fertile land that could be cultivated. The problem being that crops depreciated in value and the cost of living increased causing poverty throughout the area. Gandhi managed to reach a compromise with the government. Again in Ahmedabad Gandhi's campaign against mill owners were only partially successful.
At the completion of World War I the Indian government brought in the Rowlatt Bills. These were brought in to avoid terrorism, this meant that many civil rights were withdrawn and the press was censored. Gandhi decided on a national satyagraha against these bills. He organised a hartal, a day of fasting and prayer, which would stop the country. This Satyagraha caused different results and caused some outbreaks of violence. This led to the arrest of Gandhi.
The arrest of Gandhi caused violent outbreaks, with the death of a British soldier and the destruction of government buildings. While Gandhi was arrested a meeting was held in protest at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. General Dyer and his troops opened fire on the peaceful crowd killing at least 379 people. Before Gandhi knew of the massacre he suspended it saying that the people weren't ready for such a movement.
