Importance of Lady Macbeth

             We first meet Lady Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 5 where she is reading the letter sent by Macbeth outlining what has happened to him. From her first thought "Glamis thou are and Cawdor and shalt be what thou art promised". We see that she intends for Macbeth to fulfill the prophecy. The first soliloquy shows us that she knows her husband's character and it's weakness and that her part will be to encourage him to meet his ambition "Hie thee hither that I may pour my spirits into thine ear."
             This is Lady Macbeth's importance in the play – she is able to influence her husband and urge him to kill Duncan.
             The murder brings about a natural disorder which is also reflected in Lady Macbeth herself. In order to prepare herself for the task she needs to suppress her feminine womanly qualities and "unsex" herself.
             The strength of her influence over Macbeth is created in two ways: she plays on the ideas of masculinity and courage by implying that he is not a man if he does not have the courage to follow his ambition; she presents Macbeth with a practical plan to counter the fear of failure she sees in him. He wants darkness to cover his eyes; she wants it to cover the knife.
             Lady Macbeth is often viewed with horror because of the unfeminine ideas that she presents to Macbeth. For example, the suggestion that she would kill her own child. She also seems so sure and confident in the plan that we get a bad view of Macbeth who is supposed to be a strong hero. She0.becomes "unmanned". They become dehumanized by their crimes.
             Lady Macbeth is an important character as she is an external influence on Macbeth. Would Macbeth have murdered Duncan without persuasion? She provides a contract to Macbeth and when she openly turns herself over to evil, Macbeth hesitates – he fights his conscience.
