l Arts (MMA) event. That single event would not be enough to say that his Jiu-Jitsu was superior. To prove what Royce claimed, that the art of Jiu-Jitsu was superior, we should look into other MMA fights, from the past to the present. But before we do that, I should explain: What make Jiu-Jitsu uniquely superior?
All martial arts, to be considered martial, must answer to the following question. How can one successfully defend oneself against attack by a bigger, faster, stronger and more aggressive opponent? Many martial arts would want to narrow down this question to one involving more than one attacker, or perhaps a weapon, or even one of moral conduct. Nonetheless, the question remains-how can one best defend oneself against attack by a physically superior opponent?
With that in mind, let's look at grappling as a Martial Art. Jiu-Jitsu is under the umbrella in martial arts as a grappling style. Unlike the majority of martial arts that favor kicking and punching to defeat an attacker, grappling arts focus on "closing the distance" between you and the attacker, to grab a hold of your opponent and use that grip to take him to the ground. "Once on the ground the opponent can be controlled in a pin or submission hold. Judo, Sambo, and Olympic wrestling were, for years, the well-known grappling styles."(Gracie, Theory 2)
Jiu-Jitsu has its many forms, there is Japanese jiu-jitsu (Ju-Jitsu), Brazilian jiu-jitsu and then there is Gracie jiu-jitsu. To go into detail of each would require many more pages so I will focus on the best and most successful form, Gracie jiu-jitsu.
