nging. Hitler wasn't like his fellow soldiers. He never complained about the food they were given, or the poor living conditions they slept in. He would never talk about woman or sports, always preferring to discuss arts and history. Many soldiers judged him as 'over-eager' and 'too willing', but overall he was a likeable man who was recognised for his bravery.
             In October 1916, Hitler received a shell fragment in his leg, and was hospitalised in Germany. It was his first break from the war since 1914, when war was declared. As he recovered, he went sight seeing around Berlin. When he was there, he noticed the anti-war beliefs that the majority of public showed in the city. Hitler was surprised and appalled. He blamed the Jews as the reason the public believed such ridicule thoughts, and his ever growing hatred towards the Jews continued to grow. He volunteered once again to fight on the front, and returned to the war in March 1917.
             When mustard gas blinded Hitler's eyesight in 1918, he was deported to a military hospital.
             'Everything went black before my eyes; I tottered and groped my way back to the dormitory, threw myself on my bunk and dug my burning head into my blanket and pillow'
             When Hitler was told of the news that Germany had surrendered to enemy forces (still recovery in hospital, 1918), Hitler was devastated. He immediately believed that it had been enemies from within the army that had lost Germany the war, chiefly referring to Jews as being the traitors. He remained in a state of shock for months.
             Over the whole duration of the war he was wounded only twice and he was awarded the Iron Cross in 1918, the highest medal of honour for bravery. Although he was only ranked to corporal, he still held a very credible war record.
             Like many other Germans, Hitler believed that Germany's might meant they were right. So when Germany lost the war he decided action needed to be taken....
