ess. In their eyes, working in a nuclear lab equals working in a Nazi death camp. The main problem between these two parties is their inability to see other side's worthiness of their
causes. They can't defeat each other because neither side is absolutely wrong or absolutely right.
The Lawrence National Laboratory is located in a town of Livermore that has a population of 50,000 including 8,000 lab employees. It's the second largest laboratory of its kind. Its personnel consist mostly of white males. There is a caste system comprising of Ph.D. scientists and engineers at the top and technicians and clerical workers (mostly females) at the bottom.
There is symbolic hierarchy within the lab. The social organization of the physicists is further divided into Divisions A and B. There is a fierce rivalry between the two. Each division claims that they do the most important physics. How does one become a weapon scientist? Among the scientists there are two general types: University teachers and Lab workers. The competition between the two is based on status, rank and prestige. Those graduate students who go on to become lab workers express academic freedom and better working conditions as the primary reasons for employment. Lab workers don't have to worry about the tenure and the political hierarchy of universities. They have more time, freedom and resources to research, because they don't have to teach. Designing nuclear weapons is the kind of work where you have to believe in what you're doing. The scientists are deeply convinced that their work is essential to our national and international security. Few listed money as their deciding factor.
