In today's society, it seems there is one thing we are short, time. The world is constantly making advancement to attempt to make more time available to people. What the advancements are really doing is freeing up more time for work and more stressors. Richard Tomkins, author of "Old Father Time Becomes a Terror", touches on the causes and effects of the progressing world and how it affects time management. In this paper Team A will review a couple key points in Tomkins' essay.
Tomkins' thesis statement is placed in the middle of the essay. It is in paragraph thirteen of thirty-six. The thesis statement is "In most cases, technology has not saved time, but enabled us to do more things" (Tomkins). The thesis was placed at a perfect point in the paper; in the essay, Tomkins began by describing how things once were, in a simpler time; once the reader understands and has a feel of earlier times, he then placed the thesis statement. There is an excitement the author builds up to the reader, then the thesis statement is read, now the reader understands the meaning of the essay. After the statement, he then goes on to explain the causes and effects of time restraints.
The meaning of the line "The confusion of the endless choice....", at the end of paragraph nineteen suggests that we, as people have numerous options available and as time passes more become accessible. Every day, new products are created and commercials are aired. Options are readily available to us as consumers, such as cars, clothing, computers, grocery products, and movies. A prime example of having to many options would be standing in line for food. Most consumers absolutely hate trying to decide what to eat.
