The Third Crusade and the Modern Era
             The Third Crusade began in the Twelfth Century, it was a ruthlesss campaign in which Christian crusader traveled to Jerusalem to fight the Muslims and reclaim the Holy Land.
             The Crusades began with the Christians and the Muslims fighting over the Holy Land. In the medieval times religion played a big part in every day life, affecting everything from your social class to what you do on a Friday night. With religion playing such a large role in peoples lives, the holy cities such as Jerusalem and Nazareth were places of special significance for all people. People fought in the crusades fiercely and brutally, all in the name of God. It was thought that by fighting in the crusade they guarantee themselves a place in heaven and would correct all their wrongs." The Third Crusade was the only partially successful crusade that was conducted in the 12th century. Its effect on the development of Europe and other portions of the world was truly significant. In 1055, Pope Urban the second made a speech that had a great affect on many people throughout Europe (Runciman 67). He passed the message basically that it was Gods will for these crusades to be carried out. This speech made thousands of knights and peasants and children get up and march to Jerusalem to fight the crusades. This is primarily where the roots of Muslim and Christian hatred began. Today, this hatred is still prevalent in our world among many countries and people. In analyzing the Third Crusade, one of the most important things to look at also is who led these great forces. These notorious men rose from the ashes of previous leaders and sought to lead their lands to victory. The four main leaders of the Third Crusade were Saladin, Richard the Lion heart, King Philip of France, and King Frederic of Germany.
