workplace in the 1900's

             Unlike today's workplace environment, the 1900's was an era of one- company employees. Most employees of this era would begin their working careers with only one employer in an entry level position. The employee would continue working with the same employer until it was time for retirement. It was a commonplace for an employee "...to retire at age 65 with 50 years or more of service"(Carlson). To reward this loyalty, and service rendered by employees, companies would give pensions for those retiring. Aside from the pensions and to the delight of employees, employers would also give a gift or other token of appreciation upon retirement to those who had done so much for the company throughout the years. These are things that the employee of that era anxiously waited for throughout their careers with the company. This ambient that existed helped coin the phrase "womb to tomb"(Carlson) when referring to this era of employees. Although this system was comfortable and productive for companies and employees of the 1900's, today's volatile and competitive market has changed the working habits of many people.
             In contrast, our day in age is one of multiple company employees. It is rarer for a person to stay with the same company throughout their professional career. By varying an employee's work experiences, the employee can develop new skills. Skills the employee already posses may also be enhanced through this intellectual maturation process. The experiences gained from a range of employment become a wealth of knowledge that helps make that person more competitive in the workforce. By refining applicable skills through various workplace experiences, the job seeker becomes more of an asset to employers as opposed to those who have single dimension resumes.
