This is apparent through the great sense of unworldly aspects, there is often an abundance of supernatural or biblical creatures. Perhaps the most eminent structure in relation to gothic architecture is the gargoyles which guard the structure from above. Their function was to theoretically ward off and protect the church and the people inside from evil sprits, a concept which is embodied within the bible, "Protect me lord, hide me in the shadow of your wings, from the attacks of the wicked. They are like lions waiting for me, wanting to tear me to pieces." These gargoyles also provoke the imagination of Christians, whose ferocious features provide adequate defence and shield for followers from equally vulgar spiritual wickedness and the devil, whilst also suggesting what would come to those who turn their back from the church and its salvation, sanctuary and safeguard.
