American Subcultures in Magazi

            Within our complex society, there exist many different groups and sub-groups of individuals who share common interests and values. Within our broad culture, there are various subcultures that have developed over time by various groups of like-minded people as a means of shaping their own identities, and as a means of dealing with the social problems encountered by them. The exact purpose of a subculture varies greatly from group to group. Some subcultures have certain goals, while others are based around a common interest in a particular lifestyle, a type of music or a certain type of hobby. More precisely, a subculture is a group of individuals who share a common interest.
            
             In my research for this paper, I was astonished to find that there are many different and varied subculture magazines and periodicals available at any newsstand and on the Internet. Some of the more interesting magazines included periodicals for bikers, gamers, rappers, skateboarders and others. The integration over time of these subcultures in to mainstream society has been largely influenced by their use of print media. With the use of this medium, a once underground subculture is now considered a part of mainstream society.
            
             An excellent example would be the biker subculture. Once bikers were considered violent outlaws who attracted unwanted trouble. Biker culture has also been the source of fashion trends, like black leather, denim and tattoos. But, to bring this subculture into the mainstream required a presentation through a non–threatening medium such as a magazine. Society received such a challenge when Easyrider, "Entertainment for Adult Bikers," debuted as a bi–monthly periodical in 1971.
