Abigail Williams is not only a mischievous person, but she is a liar. Reverend Parris caught Abigail and a bunch of her friends in the woods dancing and conjuring the spirits of Mrs Putnam's seven dead babies. The town's people then start accusing witchcraft, and there is a big uproar in the town on Salem, Massachusetts. Giles Corey presents the court with a petition of 91 names of people who have been accused of being witches of performing witchcraft. Each person who had signed their name to the petition was summoned to the court of questioning, a number of them were sent to jail for the rest of their lives, and a number of them were sent to jail to be hanged. John Proctor decides to confess to being a witch before he learns that his confession would be nailed to the church door for everyone in the village to see. John decides to die as an honest man, so that he would be right with himself and god and that he would not be living a lie. Elizabeth, John Proctors wife, has made a visit to the jail to try and get him to confess to being a witch, because she has found out that she is going to have a baby. Judge Hawthorne has told john that he will allow Elizabeth to live a year longer so as not to kill the child when they hang her. John still decides not to confess, but to die as an honest man. Giles Corey presents a deposition to the court against John Proctor. He fears that his deposition will be rejected. Giles Corey is in the end crushed to death by stones, because he would not reveal his source to which he got this information about John Proctor. George Jacobs was accused by Abigail Williams of witchcraft and was eventually hanged for it. George Jacobs was the richest man and had the most land in Salem.
