Leadership in Julius Caesar

             Shakespeare writes Julius Caesar in such a way, that in the midst of all of the confusion, no one really knows who the leader of Rome is. A leader is a person who has influence, power, and command of other people. Many people believe Brutus would be considered having the most leadership qualities, which he may, but after the pros and cons are weighed out, Marc Antony overcomes this victory.
             Marc Antony has the greatest leadership qualities out of all of the candidates for the position. Antony was originally chosen to be a conspirator because Brutus needed a man of power and respect to carry on with his scheme to kill Caesar. He is a great manipulator of the people. Antony uses Caesar's death as a catalyst for his power by creating frenzy among them by his great use of communication ability. The people are so demanding of revenge from Caesar's death, they do not realize that Antony is taking control. This is an example of Antony using his intelligence to gain power as a leader, another necessity to leadership.
             Antony uses his friends to help him gain power, namely Octavius. This proves to be helpful because having a person like Octavius by your side provides protection and allows for less vulnerability. He immediately eliminates the conspirators "whose names are pricked" (IV, I, 1). Antony also makes other leader type people look bad. For example with Lepidus, Antony says, "He shall but bear them as the ass bears gold" (IV, I, 21).
             Antony's greatest powers appear when he is able to manipulate people. When he is able to do that, he is able to do endless things, even become a leader of Rome. Antony's manipulating powers only go so far as to manipulate everyone except Octavius. Octavius will eventually turn against Antony and overthrow him to rule Rome.
