Some have the fantasy but do not act upon their urges and to many paedophiles the condition is considerably distressing. In fact, according to DSM IV, those who just have the fantasies are only considered paedophiles if they find the thoughts very distressing.
             The question remains, why is the incidence of paedophilia so high in the church and given the roles that priests play, why are there even any paedophile priests? Does the church attract these mentally ill people or does it create them? One author asserts that while alcoholism is the most common factor in sexually abusive parents, "conservative religious beliefs" is the second most common factor. (Krisin et al, 2000) Why this is the case is unclear but also points to something in religion that is either attracting paedophiles or 'moulding' them to become paedophilic.
