Anna's Story

             Anna's story is a biographical narrative written by Bronwyn Donaghy, who delves deeply to explore the tradgic life of Anna Wood. Anna was a fifteen year old girl who enjoyed the ups and downs of growing up as a teenager in Sydney. She faced the many difficulties that young people face such as, fitting in at school, teenage sexual relationships and the issue which the novel confronts teenage drug abuse. The anti-drug agenda brought forth by the author is clear and this is reinforced by her use of language, structure, and the use of statements from professionals and celebrities, which causes the reader to respond to the characters and situation. The techniques used are simply applied to provoke the reader, so as to adopt the anti-drug message.
             The language used by the authors is descriptive and somewhat confronting and encourages the reader to draw a negative view of drugs. Her descriptive language often compares drugs to a beast, a foreign substance which takes over and control of who ever consumes it, pg(155). It also expresses drugs as an over powering, unstoppable force which in complete control. This use of language draws from the readers understanding of war and conflict, as it compares drugs to invaders where the consumer is on the losing side. This negative portrayal of drugs reinforces the author's anti-drug message and also causes the reader to respond sympathetically towards the characters and situations.
             Even so-called non-fiction texts are all portrayals of the truth, as the author's values, attitudes and points of view are brought forth within the text. Therefore as the reader our views of characters and certain situations often parallel to the views and attitudes of the author. The author will do this by including and excluding certain information quotes and details which may not support her anti-drug agenda.
