Hard evidence indicating the age of the bank only indicates 3000BC however, remains of primitive deer antler picks were carbon-dated giving us a very accurate indication of the time that major work was done on the site. Regardless of whether Stonehenge was build on the remains of an even earlier pre-Neolithic place of worship the beginning of the Stonehenge monument were constructed or underwent massive restoration at this time. Along with this new embankment the still semi-nomadic builders constructed a series of 56 evenly spaced holes around the edge of the enclosure, they are named Aubrey Holes after the English antiquary, John Aubrey who discovered them. There is evidence that these originally held wooden posts but were also occasionally used for burial of cremated human remains.
Stonehenge as we know it is the result of constructions started by the nomadic Neolithic inhabitants of the Salisbury Plains circa 4000BC. Starting from the outermost elements of Stonehenge we encounter the Heel Stone, a large unworked pillar of sarsen (a hard sandstone) weighing approximately 45 tonnes.
