This paper will compare and contrast the characteristics of two main characters, Beowulf and Sir Gawain. If both are looked at, today people can see that the two figures truly represent the ideal of a hero in different ways, which in the end affects the out come of both poems.
A person could examine Beowulf in several different ways when they are trying to determine if Beowulf is a true hero. One of the obvious qualities that make him a hero in the eyes of fellow men is his amazing physical strength. We are made aware of this at first when Beowulf introduces him self as a hero who can crush water sprites, among other things. Therefore he is equipped to defeat Grendel, if fate will have it so (GradeSaver).Grendel is the monster that is described as the descendent of Cain that has been attacking Heorot for 12 years. However Beowulf's strength is questioned by Unferth who tries to discredit Beowulf Unferth's job is to test the actual valor of the warrior and his ability to fend off a verbal attack.. He accuses Beowulf of losing a swimming contest with Breca. Beowulf disagrees and states that he has not only defeated Breca, he also fought off heaps of sea-monsters, thanks to both God and fate. What heroic deeds have Breca, or even Unferth, done? Unferth even killed his brothers, and he has not done anything to stop Grendel. Upon hearing Unferth shamed by Beowulf, the whole company laughs. With his graceful and complete defense, Beowulf proves himself to be the skilled warrior, able to fight with words and swords equally well (GradeSaver). Beowulf Slays Grendel without the use of a shield or sword the reason why Beowulf decides to kill Grendel with out the use of any armor is because Beowulf feels that he should have no advantages over Grendel. In the slaying of this abnormally large creature Beowulf shows his amazing strength. By conquering Grendel without any armor Beowulf proves to the people that he truly has amazing strength...
