Two Parents, Three Styles of Discipline
After Mike and I got married and had children our differences in discipline would become apparent. . Soon I discovered that we had three different styles, and applied each of them differently. The first one was physical discipline. Mike was one who would take off his belt, or grab anything within his reach to smack or spank them. An example of this was when my son was hitting his sister and refused to stop, Mike just picked up a hot wheel track and smacked him. On the other hand, if I were present during this incident, I would have just used my hand to smack or spank him. The second form of discipline was one I called voice discipline. Mike was a yeller. For instance, we were on a trip to Albuquerque and the children were arguing and would not be quiet, Mike yelled at them for ten minutes to stop, or he would pull the truck over and give them both a spanking. Quite the opposite, I would have just pulled over , and in a stern voice with my teeth clenched together , tell them to knock it off and smack them. The last form of discipline was what I called privilege discipline. A good example of this was when my daughter got an F on her report card.Mike just took away her compact disc player player for one week. In contrast, I took away all of her privileges, which included the television, her video games, as well as her compact disc player, and any other thing of value I could think of until I got a progress report from her teacher . After seventeen years of disciplining our children , I discovered that the loss of a privilege was more painful than any voice or physical discipline put together. This was the most effective one as well.
