             1. What is your initial response to the text?
             Out of the four books I read, Angela's Ashes is my favorite. It was a sad story, but there was a happy ending. At times, it was humorous and lighthearted. When I think about how bad their lives were, it makes me sad and I feel bad for the people that have to go through that.
             2. In the text, where are you, what kind of place is it, what kind of people do you meet and what are their customs, beliefs and values?
             In Angela's Ashes you are in Limerick, Ireland around the 1930s and 1940s. Limerick is a very poor city where food and warmth is scarce. Frank McCourt is the main character. His story is about growing up and trying to make a better life for himself. Angela McCourt is Frank's mother. She has dealt with a lot, her husband's alcoholism, her children's deaths, and feeding her family. She is always caring and puts her children before anything else. Malachy McCourt is Frank's father. He spends his wages on alcohol while his children starve. Malachy loves his children very much.
             3. Briefly summarize the major events of the work.
             Angela marries Malachy McCourt after she becomes impregnated with Frank. Angela struggles to feed her growing family, while Malachy spends his wages on alcohol. Margaret, the new baby sister, dies and Angela becomes depressed. The McCourts return to Ireland. While in Ireland, Angela has a miscarriage, Frank's two younger brothers die, and Malachy continues to drink away the family's money. Angela gives birth to two sons, Michael and Alphie. When Frank turns ten, he is confirmed. Frank becomes ill with typhoid fever and is in the hospital for months. Malachy goes to England to work, but fails to send money home. Frank begins to work for Mr. Hannon, then Mr. Timoney, Uncle Ab, the post office, Mrs. Finucane, and Mr. McCaffrey.
