             Option 1: What does Of Mice and Men show us about the importance of friendship?
             'Of Mice and Men' shows us a great deal about the importance of friendship and the ability to stick together and achieve your dreams. John Steinbeck compares both men who are fortunate enough to have friends and those who aren't, and prove to his readers how much more you can achieve with two people rather than one and how much ones company is appreciated, yet often taken for granted.
             In the book 'Of Mice and Men', we quickly learn about the close but different friendship George and Lenny experience and the dream they are able to share together and stride towards. George is often complaining about the strain and inconvenience Lenny puts on his life. "God a'mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy", George says to Lenny, although really, George appreciates Lenny's company and this is evident when George tells Slim, "I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain't no good. They don't have no fun". This statement proves George's friendship to Lenny is important to him and he realises how hard and lonely it would be on his own. Lenny is certainly benefited from having such a great friendship with George, as he would find it hard to cope on his own without George to rely on and constantly help him out. "I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you" Lenny tells George happily. Together George and Lenny share a dream to one day own their own place and work whenever they want to. They think that their dream is in close reach, but really, it is a long way away and not as easy to achieve as they imagine. Many may argue that when George shoots Lenny at the end of the book, he is betraying his friendship towards Lenny, as a real friend would never shoot his own partner and would always stand by
