The novel "Main Street" by Sinclair Lewis is the story of a woman
who is struggling with her new home. The main character, Carol Milford,
gets married to a man named Will Kennicot and moves to a new town with
him to start her new life. Will, who is a doctor, likes the new town and is
Carol, on the other hand, dislikes the new town and most of the people
in it until she is invited to a literature reading group. She finally finds some
people who she can relate with. She still doesn't like the town much though.
Carol is alone throughout most of the book because her husband is out
on business most of the time and out of town. She meets a man named Erik
and they spend so much time together that they eventually fall in love. The
neighbors are the type of people who look out of their windows at night time
to see what the neighbors are doing and Will hears some talk of this.
Will lets it slide because he doesn't believe that Carol would cheat on
him and, in fact, she never does. But, one night when Will was away, Erik
came to the Kennicot's home and asked Carol to take a walk with him. He
explains to her how hw loves her and that he cannot live without seeing her.
They go back to Carol's house and have a long talk by the fireplace when ,
Will drives Erik home and has a nice long talk with Carol when they
get back home. Carol tells Will that she loves him and will call it off with
Erik. She sends him a note and they do not see each other much after that.
Carol and Will then travel the world for three and a half months trying
to patch up their relationship. They then settle in Washing D.C. and Carol
