Here is a man in charge of taking care of countless men, undersized, and fighting a war in a way he was not used to fighting. He knew that the only way he would be able to hurt the Indians was when they were the least mobile. He devised a plan to attack the Indians during the winter months. This proved to be a good decision. Knowing that the army could fight during the winter months, the Indians were forced to live on reservations peacefully or fight year round wars with the army. From his organization of his division, to his war strategies, you have to believe that Sheridan was a very smart and brave commander.
             The infantry in the west faced many problems during this period. They overcame hardships and disadvantages. This gives me an idea of how these men were. When they could have just given up and lost, they learned from their enemies and used their own tactics against them. They fought through their hardships and came out victorious.
             Many things were going on during the Texas years. Black soldiers faced prejudice not only from citizens of Texas, but also from the army they were fighting for. The infantry had to deal with terrible living conditions and boredom of garrison life. They also had to deal with the Indian and Mexican attacks of outlaws and Indians who refused to live on reservation lands.
