Shades of Gay
             In a Newsweek Poll, "83% of Americans say gays deserve job protection, up from 56% in a 1977 survey". In the article, Shades of Gay, by John Leland, it talks about a couple in their small town in central Pennsylvania. It talk's about how things use to be back in the 1970's compared to now. It too talks about real people and their opinions as well as their encounters.
             A couple named Gary and Greg, both in their late 30's, live in a small town in central Pennsylvania. Where they live, they are known as "the guys", to their neighbors. When they go to the grocery store they call each other "honey", and the kids of their straight friends call them "uncle" and "uncle". Gary's co-workers tend to talk more about gay issues than he does. However they do realize that they have the same worries that a gay couple would.
             Now a days with famous people coming out like rock star Melissa Etheridge and her partner Julie Cypher, more couples are having or adopting children. Couples are also engaging in the public life of schools, day care centers and sports leagues. For gay teens, who have experienced dark isolation, about 700 high schools now have gay-straight associations. Last week California passed Proposition 22, becoming the 31st state to pass a new law banning same-sex marriages (Colorado will soon become the 32nd) (Leland 72). In Newsweek there were 2 polls given one to the general public and the other to gays. It showed that about two thirds of the general public say that they have contact with openly gay people. However, it still doesn't mean that they don't appose to gay marriage, adopting, serving in the military or teaching elementary school.
