Elizabeth Bennet of Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, is a timeless character in the world of literature. She is a very strong and intelligent character who is not afraid to speak her mind when she feels necessary. Elizabeth believes in love when it comes to matrimony, but to most people of her time, love is not a reality, and never an option in marriage. Young ladies of a certain class were to marry those within their social class, who could support them financially. Elizabeth Bennet is at war with the social system she lives in, especially when it comes to marriage.
             Elizabeth does not agree to the social system of her time, relating to matrimony. Her desire is to have her marriage decision depend upon love, and not a man's assets. Collins, the relative entailed to the Longbourn estate, is a pompous and odious man, who serves as the perfect example of impertinence in the human character. Considering his entailment to Elizabeth's home, it would be a good idea for Elizabeth to accept his hand in marriage, but instead she declines. She is not in love with this man and does not feel any connection towards him, even if he is her cousin. Another example of a perfectly good and wealthy marriage proposal turned down due to lack of feelings for the man, is Mr. Darcy's proposal. Elizabeth refuses to marry him because she believes him to be pompous and too proud, and she will not allow herself to love someone with that kind of personality. Wealth and relativeness do not cloud Elizabeth's judge of people's characters.
             Unlike most ladies of her time, Elizabeth judges others solely on their personalities, not on their wealth. Mrs. Bennet is an example of a character who is right for her time. She is constantly concerned with getting all of her daughters married off to men of high class and great wealth. She enjoys bringing her daughters to an array of balls, and having/attending many dinner parties with single men...
