John Proctor in The Crucible

No matter how short it is, this quote is long enough to describe John Proctor. He is a complex character, who finds himself in a tough situation between his wife's living (or dyeing) and a crazy woman who's trying to kill her by abusing the law, in one way or the other.
One thing is obvious: he's a good, righteous, honest man. He knows that he has to stay with his wife and their children and is sure that he's doing the right thing. Abby is doing everything to make him love her, to make him leave his wife for her, but he resists. OK, that's one thing, but the other is, what John Proctor really wants? I think that even he couldn't answer this question. His man's attitudes are very questionable. He's certainly not a strong-minded man who will decidedly deny to possibly ruin his own life because of a woman who's desperately in love, and who has nothing to lose by confessing that love to him. Also, how can he think "softly" about a cold, self-possessed bitch? Is he so good and does he have so much good feelings in his heart that he's thinking softly about Abigail Williams, a women who's trying to kill his wife and "dance with him on her grave"? It's pretty obvious that he's loving her. Maybe that's not love, maybe is just passion, but - whatever. I mean, why is he meeting her in the middle of the night, in woods?
He died.. Probably, he made, not maybe good, but honest decision! But still, he was insecure about what he wants, and what he should do.
