However, behind this happy face, which Germany showed to the world the Nazi leaders were ruthlessly reshaping the country to Hitler's vision, 'nazifying' institutions and attacking those who would not fit into the Nazi State. Germany was being trained and prepared for the struggle which lay ahead.
             The first and foremost Nazi victims were Germany's half million Jews, members of a race which has been persecuted for nearly 2000 years, but which in 1933 was on the threshold of a plot to exterminate it completely. Hitler believed that the German nation, which included all German-speaking peoples living on the fringes of Germany, was a master-race. As a master-race, they must become powerful, united and in possession, of whatever land and materials they needed. Hitler's love of the German people was soon balanced by hatred of the Jews. Jewish race has proved very skilful with money and in business dealings. Many of its members also reached the highest peaks of success in medicine, the law and in science, again providing a motive for jealousy.
             The persecution of Jewish people was carried out through the clever use of propaganda. From 1933 onwards, propaganda played a key role in winning over the hearts and minds of the German people to the ideas of National Socialism. The man most associated with propaganda was Joseph Goebbels, who became Minister of Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda in March 1933. Goebbels quickly brought all radio broadcasting and newspapers under Nazi control and introduced various measures to achieve control of the press, cinema, theatre, literature and art.
