Man in the Woods

The Man in the Woods, an action packed suspense story, takes place in New Bedford, MA. The setting switches between New Bedford Regional High School, Helen's (the protagonist) home, the woods, and the libraries & the Fairchild mansion. Rosemary Wells tells the story in the third person narrative.
The protagonist and main character in The Man in the Woods is Helen Curragh, a 14 year-old freshman at New Bedford Regional High School. She is new to the school and becomes friends with a boy named Pinky when he opens her jammed locker. They are friends and stay with each other throughout the book. Helen is an excellent artist and gets a job at the school's newspaper "The Whaler".
The protagonist and main character Helen is a kinetic character because she does change by the end of the story. At the beginning of the story, Helen had just moved to New Bedford from Texas and joined New Bedford Regional High. When she got there she was shy and didn't know anyone. Then when her locker got jammed a boy named Pinky helped her open it. From that point on they were friends. Also, one of her teachers, Mr. B, recognized her talent of drawing and sent her to join "The Whaler" the school newspaper. There she received a job as an artist. That is how Helen changed and that is why she is a kinetic character.
In a story the protagonist is developed by either the author's description, what other's say, dialogue, thoughts, or actions and reactions. In my book, I learned the most about Helen from dialogue. For the most part this story is made up of dialogue and the author is the narrator. Foe example, I learned Helen was a great artist because she and her teacher Mr. Bro had had a conversation about a political cartoon she had drew. He commented on the artwork and the quality of the message it portrayed and recommended her for a job at the "Whaler" as an artist.
