Were the brothers right to exchange babies?
It was unethical for Siladri and Made Kerti to trade infants. When I was reading The Painted Alphabet and encountered this situation, I wasn't greatly effected by it because I thought it was just like how people adopt babies all the time when the baby doesn't have a home or the parents are unfit to take care of the infant, but now that I think about it more, I can see that there was no real reason for them to need to trade infants. I think that this is incredibly unfair for the child and in most cases the practice disadvantages the child.
In India it is common for people to buy, sell or trade babies, for many reason; prearranged marriages, slavery and for their organs. When people do this it is unacceptable. Some people might claim that it is acceptable to them because Siladri and Made Kerti were very close brothers and they wanted to remember each other. But there are many other ways to remember each other without being unfair to their children. Only when Made Kerti and Rajin were about to die that they finally reveal the truth to Mudita that Made Kerti and Siladri traded babies at birth. This implys that if they didn't die then they would have never have told Mudita.
I think that children should never be sold bought or trade like objects. The only way I think that it should be done is to adopt a child. I think it is great to adopt a child because it give the child the opportunity to have a real family.
In conclusion I think it could not be permitted to buy, sell or trade babies anywhere in the would and this is what I think all people should think. Adoption is the only way I think that some one should be able to look after someone else's child permanently.
