Edgar Allan Poe

             Edgar Allan Poe may perhaps be labeled as one of the greatest and unhappiest poets of all time. Throughout his lifetime of the death, poverty, alcoholism and insanity, Poe has been a huge influence in American literature. Throughout this whirl wind of misfortune, Poe was very insecure, grappling to make ends meat. When he was a young boy, he gambled to raise money for the things he needed. We also know that he burnt his furniture to keep warm. This insecure way of living continued throughout his life. As an older man, when his wife Virginia was on her death bed, he had trouble feeding her, keeping her warm and giving her medicine. Even though Poe lived his life in a very insecure and highly emotional way, his writing was always very structured.
             In his short story, "The Purloined Letter," Poe tells an intricate, logically structured, story of a stolen letter. The letter passes from its rightful place, into the hands of a criminal and ironically, the letter was stolen from the criminal into the hands of another. He than hands it over to the Prefect after cleverly tricking him into giving him fifty thousand francs. Only a very structured form of writing would be able to portray this story in an understandable way.
             Among all of Poe's poems, "Annabel Lee" particularly comes to mind when I think of structure. In each stanza, he comes back to the phrase, "In a kingdom by the sea." Also, every other line rhymes with me.
             "It was many and many a year ago,
             That a maiden there lived whom you may know
             And this maiden she lived with no other though
             Than to love and be loved by me."
             This story closely relates to his life when his wife Virginia was ill and about to pass away, so it is ironic that this poem is so structured because at this time Poe was very emotionally insecure. He actually had short periods o
