By using these three categories we begin to understand and read with more depth every book that we own. These steps or categories as Shattuck puts it enlightens us to not only read books, but also to read any material with words that we can get our hands on. Using Shattuck's findings we see that these are not basic stages we as people go through, but only the platform of our reading skills.
             As we grow up, we develop language and grasp the meaning of words and their relationship in our reading. We do not just learn how to do this right away, but we gradually learn and we must comprehend the words or sentences by relating it to truly understand its content. Thus stating that the basic comprehension of any sort of reading is the most important category in reading according to Shattuck. Shattuck uses the example from the story in Helen Keller's book "The Story of my Life", when she finally was shown the meaning of water.
