The important themes in Wide S

             In part one of the novel "Wide Sargasso Sea", the themes of betrayal, love and family relationships and gossip clearly centre round the main character Antoinette. Then there are brief introductions to freedom, identity and love for nature, however they are still important.
             In the earlier part of the novel one immediately gets a feeling that the relationship between Antoinette and her mother (Annette) is very poor. Annette seems to take more interest in Pierre, maybe as he is severely sick compared to Antoinette. Annette is oblivious of her daughter's whereabouts. She does not know where she spends the day or whether she has a new dress. Antoinette longs for a sense of safety and security that she is unable to get from her mother. After one learns of Pierre's death, Annette seems to have been affected emotionally and mentally that she pushes Antoinette away from her.
             Antoinette and Christophine seem to share a stronger bond or better relationship compared to Antoinette and Annette. Christophine sings to Antoinette and she even puts her to bed at night. Christophine represents the authority figure in the novel, and one observes more of this later on when she tells Antoinette that "woman must have spunks". Antoinette confides in Christophine, she has truly been loyal to her.
             Antoinette and her Aunt Cora also share a warm relationship, in that she cared for her after the house at Coulibri was burnt down. She even gave Antoinette two rings. Mr. Mason and Antoinette shared a good relationship in that he visited her at the convent. In a way he rescued their family from poverty, however, he planned an arranged marriage which was not a very plausible act.
             Betrayal and unfaithfulness is also prominent in part one. The first incident occurred between Tia and Antoinette. Tia seemed to be Antoinette's best and only friend; however her first act of betrayal occurred when she stole her dress. This lat...
