He took severe advantage of this, raising taxes as he please, abolishing town meetings, he sent innocent men to jail, and even out restrictions on the liberty of the press. He went so far as to declare charters and land grants invalid. He demanded many of the charters back., while some gave in and handed them over, a few hid them, but still swayed to his will.
             By this time a plan had been formulated by Parliament back in England to overthrow King James II and replace him with his estranged daughter, Mary and her husband, William of Orange. William and Mary came with a Dutch army in 1688 and by early 1689 King James had abandoned his throne. The Glorious Revolution had been a bloodless one. This plan had been largely supported by the colonists and when new reached them that William and Mary had landed on British soil they took advantage of it and capture Governor Andros and sent him back to England as a prisoner.
             The colonists assumed that under William and Mary their original freedoms were to be restored, but to their dismay, it was not completely so. The charters were all restored and lasted many long years. While the laws were yet again made by an elected legislature, all acts had to be sent to England to be approved before carried out. The governor and his advisors were to be appointed by the crown to work with the colonists. After the Glorious Revolution Massachusetts and Plymouth were united as one colony, and the self-governing Plymouth was no more. John Locke soon wrote his Second Treatise on Government which set forth thata theory of government based not on divine right but on contract, and contended that the people, endowed with natural rights of life, liberty and property, had the right to rebel when governments violated these natural rights.?
