Sociology

While reading the first chapter of this text book, the one thing that really caught my eye was the section on "symbols". While reading this section it made me think about how big a part symbols do play in our lives. The love symbol intrigued me the most out of all of the different symbols that the book lists.
In the book it says, "An expectation of 'true love' will be a constant source of emotional satisfaction sets people up for crushed hopes, for when dissatisfaction enters marriage, as they inevitable do, spouses tend to blame one another for what they see as the other's failure." This statement is exactly right in today's society. The last time I checked the divorce rate in The United States was close to 50%. When a couple enters marriage, they share the common bond of love, as they learn to adjust to each other they find things out that they don't like. Their love for each other has blinded them from seeing these things before the marriage. This is a common situation that occurs often in our country. I can relate to this because it has happened in my family before. While reading about this is the book it opened my eyes to why it happens. The symbol of love plays an important role in our society. Lots of kids think they are in love at a young age and when something happens they are "heartbroken".
I can tell from this first chapter that this course is going to make me think and realize things about our ways of living that I haven't thought of before.
