America and India, what would these countries have in common? Can two countries that are separated by miles and have totally different historical backgrounds have something similar? Various exchanges between the two countries and a consistent intermingling of these cultures have lead to a lot of similarities and differences between these two countries. I am going to focus on the aspects of social relationships in India and in America.
             Americans are not as closed as Indians. There are easy to talk to and always have something to talk about. There are willing to be friendly with almost every one and anyone but they do know when to draw the line. For example if you place an American and an Indian in a room it will be the American person who initiates the conversation. Since Indians do not identify too easily with foreigners they find it hard to interact with them. This forces a number of people to feel that Indians do not converse too much with foreigners since they are not too comfortable in speaking the language. This reminds me of one of the retreats I attended back home. The retreat was organized by an American woman and she was preaching about the various temptations Jesus faced and the manner in which he was able to surpass them. After speaking for about an hour she asked the audience, which consisted mainly of an Indian population, what they felt about the temptations. Not even a word was uttered. But the very next moment an Indian person went up and posed the same question and the replies from the audience shocked her.
             The manner in which friends are defined in America is vastly different to the manner in which it is defined back home. A friend to someone in India is someone who you can identify with and have spent a lot of time with.
