             Characters
            
             Lennie-He is a large, strong, childlike migrant worker. Because of his mental disability, he depends upon George for protection and guidance. Although, Lennie is gentle and kind, he doesn't understand his own strength. He loves to pet soft things, such as small animals, dresses, and people's hair. Lennie shares a dream with George that someday they will own a farm together.
            
             George-He is a small, short-tempered, witty, migrant worker. He travels with and cares for Lennie. Sometimes he talks about how much better his life would be without having Lennie around. George is devoted to protecting Lennie. He shares a very special friendship with Lennie. He has a dream of sharing a farm with Lennie someday.
            
             Candy-He is an aging ranch handyman. He lost his hand in an accident on the ranch. Candy is concerned about his future on the ranch, because of his age. He offers his life's savings to Lennie and George if they will include him in their dream of owning a small farm someday. His companion was his aging dog, which is shot in the back of the head by Carlson, as an alleged act of mercy.
            
             Curley's wife-She is the only character in the book who is not given a name. She is Curley's possession. She tries to talk to the ranch hands because she is lonely, but Curley beats them up if they talk to her. Before she married Curley, she dreamed of becoming an actress. She was very unhappy with her marriage and dreamed of a better life.
            
             Curley-He is the son of the ranch owner. He is rude, obnoxious, and a little guy who is very jealous of any man who looks at or talks to his wife. Curley likes to pick fights with bigger guys. He wore high-heeled boots to distinguish himself from other men.
