"The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a story that documents a woman that is locked up in a room and basically driven crazy. She was left in a room and her life was seemingly only exposed to the yellow wallpaper. The story itself showed the treatment of women in the early twentieth century. From the story, I was able to witness an example of that treatment and compare that treatment to the treatment of women today. The story allowed me to see that the treatment of women has grown. The author was successful at creating suspense as to what was going through the lady's head and what would be her next move. Gilman really forced the reader to monitor the progression of her mental state and anticipate what the next one would be. As the story progresses, she goes from feeling paranoid, fearful, enslaved, and she really hates the wallpaper. As the story progresses, she begins to become used to it, and actually started to become one and identify with it.
             The way that Charlotte Perkins Gilman chose to narrate the story in the first person point of view gives the reader the ability to try and view the story through the eyes of the main character. There are times in the story when the reader is able to actually place themselves in her shoes and see the scene as if they were really her. Whenever she talked about the wallpaper, I placed myself in the room and could almost really see the wall paper. I could smell the stench that she said that he wall paper had. I could see a eyes and the patterns of the paper.
             The writing style that Gilman chose to use also seemed to reflect the way that the lady's mind worked. There were a lot of short choppy thoughts and paragraphs throughout the story that seemed to be sporadic.
