Analysis of Franny and Zooey

             J.D. Salinger, in his novel Franny and Zooey, published in 1961, can be seen as an author thriving to release his inner thoughts and emotions through his characters. Many authors have been known to have related characteristics between their characters and themselves. In the post war era when this novel was written, Salinger faced an unbelievably critical audience. He uses tone and language to express himself through the words and actions of his characters. J.D. Salinger's personality, problems, and interests are depicted in the lives of his creations.
             In both novels The Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey, Salinger's characters speak negatively of plays and the people involved in them. Holden refers to these people as phonies, in the theatre as well as the social world. Franny also voices her opinion of the theatre in her explanation of why she quit. "I'm just sick of the ego, ego, ego. I'm sick of everybody that wants to get somewhere, do something distinguished and all, be somebody interesting. It's disgusting -- it is, it is." (Franny and Zooey, 28) The irony of Franny being a former actress can be compared to that of Salinger's former interest in writing plays, none of which were published. Salinger can be seen as a person very common to Franny when considering that their interest in the theatre was much greater before they found out how the people were behind the scenes and the values of the business.
             Religion plays a major part in the life of Franny Glass. In the restaurant with Lane, Franny discusses her newfound interest in spirituality. She explains that she has been practicing the Jesus prayer and tells Lane the benefits. "I don't know what, but something happens, and the words get synchronized with the person's heartbeats, and then you're actually praying without ceasing.
