Hannibalic war

ss at Cannae. Paullus was also elected consul in 219 with victory in Illyria against Demetrius of Pharos. This is where Livy and Polybius commence with mixed thoughts. Livy declares that Paullus and Varro had quaestors Lucius Atilius and Lucius Furius Bibaculus respectively (Livy 22.49.16). Polybius on the other hand declares that Gnaeus Serviliu Germinus and Marcus Atilius Regulus the two consuls from 217 commanding the center (Polyb. 3.114.6). According to Livy though Atilius was sent back to Rome due to his age (Livy 22.40.6) and was hence elected as censor in 214 therefore he could not have been present and died at the battle as Polybius suggests (Polyb. 3.116.11). There is an agreement with the number of military tribunes declared by both though as Polybius suggests that there were at least forty-eight while Livy states that twenty-nine had been killed.
Hannibal had obvious control over the Carthaginian army. Livy (21.4.3-5, 8) describes how highly he thinks of Hannibal and how he has both control over his courage and shrewdness. Polybius also tells how Hannibal was unanimously chosen as commander (Polyb.3.13.3-4). Hannibal also had the aid of council, family ties being the greatest part in who and where the council was placed. For example Hannibal's brother Mago was stationed with him in the center. Hanno commander of the Numidian cavalry was also considered to be his nephew according to Polybius. Livy in contrast says that Maharbal son of Himilco to be in command of the Numidian cavalry. It is also important to note that Mago (the Samnite), Myrcan and Barmocar were included in the treaty of 215.
